For some, the arrival of Autumn may be melancholic. You can feel those cold gusts of wind coming, you wrap yourself up in a woolen layer, just in case. But in South Australia, when the air cools down, some intrepid hikers are tying their laces for their four-day private hike in the ancient Flinders Ranges. We are excited to welcome our first guests of the Arkaba Walk season for 2016, starting today!
The signature star beds have been freshly dressed, stunning new season menus have been created and the bar well replenished with new South Australian vintages. Our first group of walkers are setting into the wild this morning to traverse the flat basin of Wilpena Pound. The jewel in the crown of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. A natural amphitheatre of mountains and a sacred place to the Adnyamathanha people.
A group of seven long standing friends who, along with our fabulous field guides, will enjoy each other’s company whilst getting in some slow, ambling physical activity in one of the most striking outback settings in Australia. As you learn the Aboriginal stories of the land and strata layers reveal the evidence of the earliest life forms on earth, you know this place will stay etched in your heart.
Walking into camp after a day of spotting Australia’s three largest macropod species, lunching in the shade of the giant River Red Gum trees, you will be greeted by a cold towel and a drop of fine wine while you freshen up to dine al fresco in the wilderness. Later you enjoy an after dinner tipple and toast a marshmellow around the camp fire. Now, imagine your home for the night is a vast unspolied land, full of stars, full of ancient stories. Imagine the last thing you see before you go to sleep is the depth of that starry sky as you curl up in your warm, cosy swag. And how humbling it is to witness the rugged cliffs of the Elder Range being set ablaze in orange glory by the first rays of sunlight. These moments are priceless. And that’s what we call the Wild Bush Luxury experience on the Arkaba Walk.
There’s something primeval about walking, something purifying that allows you to disconnect from the every-day hustle and bustle and reconnect with raw elements of nature – with what’s essential, what’s eternal. People have walked ancient paths for centuries. And walking through the Flinders Ranges and Arkaba’s private wildlife conservancy is taking a walk through the geological history of time, without foregoing the creature comforts. We look forward to sharing our passion for this country with the group walking with us for the next few days. And we look forward to sharing it with you throughout the season which continues every week until the middle of October.
The all new four-day Flinders Ranges Long Weekender package includes all meals, drinks, a support vehicle taking your luggage between camps, two nights camping in deluxe swags on one of our famous star beds, one night in the 1850s Arkaba Homestead plus your transfers from Adelaide. And there’s 20% off for new bookings made by 31 March to walk May – August 2016.
