Our guides are the key to a rich experience.

Our people

These are the inspiring people who bring Arkaba to life.  The spirited characters who unravel and share the fascinating stories of Arkaba with you.

All of Arkaba’s guides have recently completed a ten day Wild Bush Luxury nature guiding course, based on training programs endorsed by the Field Guides Association of South Africa  (FGASA), a professional association of highly-trained nature guides, tour operators and hospitality institutions.

Brendon Bevan, Manager

Position: General Manager

To say that Brendon is qualified for his role as Arkaba’s General Manager is an understatement. From the age of 4 years Brendon was introduced to the glorious African outdoors when his father purchased a small game reserve in the North West Province of South Africa. It was here Brendon’s love and passion for the environment was spawned! Later in life he enjoyed a career as a guide on many reserves and private lodges throughout the Southern African region with his guiding career taking him as far as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania and South Africa.

Brendon has been chief wildlife warrior, conservationist and property manager of Arkaba since 2010. He is the chairperson of the South Australian Arid Lands North Flinders Group and has been actively engaged with South Australian National Parks’ ‘Bounceback’, a landscape scale conservation program. He has participated in programs to make Arkaba a role model conservation property as a buffer property on the edge of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park and also sits on the South Australian Natural Resources Management and Arid Lands Group, an interaction and sharing of ideas around natural resource management. Brendon loves applying a variation of the knowledge gained over years in Africa to an ever changing environment in the incredibly diverse ecosystems at Arkaba.

What got you started with guiding?
I was extremely fortunate to be exposed to this lifestyle from a very early age. Once the bug had bitten, there was simply no alternative for me.

What do you find most interesting about working at Arkaba?
To see a natural environment in a state of positive change evolve before your very eyes, is the most rewarding and enriching experience of my life so far.

Is there something you love showing to / doing for guests?
Sharing the beauty of this landscape and enabling our guests to participate in our story, having them leave us feeling as though they have made a genuinely positive contribution. That is why I am here!

Finally, what do you think guests love most about their stay at Arkaba?
The feeling that Arkaba creates is something very difficult to describe. It is the humbling experience of sharing the vastness of Arkaba with a handful of like-minded adventurers, the intimate meal times with our chefs, the attention to detail and friendliness of our lodge team and the obvious passion displayed by each and every one of our people. We genuinely spend each day with friends doing what we love.

Charlie

Position: Head Guide

What got you started with guiding?
I have always loved and taken much joy from heading out into the Australian bush and travelling Australia and the world in general. From the age of 16 I was lucky enough to start guiding people around Taronga Zoo and have loved engaging people with wildlife and natural areas ever since.

What do you find most interesting about working at Arkaba?
The variation of habitat and the luxury of having 64,000 acres of conservancy, you can’t help being swept away in the vastness and just sheer beauty of it all. I have personally been able to see some of the small and dramatic changes and improvements in the property since the removal of stock and continued removal of feral pest species, a change which will continue to be highly interesting and exciting into the future.

Is there something you love showing to / doing for guests?
Simply put it has to be walking the ancient landscape of Arkaba walk through its dried creek beds and stop and relax under a majestic red gum.

Finally, what do you think guests love most about their stay at Arkaba?
Just being able to disconnect from every day life, to take the time to just slow down and take scope of what nature has to offer.

Position: Field Guide

What got you started with guiding?
I’ve always enjoyed being in and learning about the natural environment. The opportunity to start my career as a nature guide really came from a chance meeting. Since then I’ve found my love of this job growing as I am able to constantly build on my knowledge and share this with interesting guests from all over the world.

What do you find most interesting about working at Arkaba?
Every single day is different. No two guests are the same and certainly no two safaris are ever the same. Every sunrise and every sunset is unique and you never know what you’ll see in between!

Is there something you love showing to / doing for guests?
I always love the little unexpected surprises. Whether it’s canapes on a beautiful lookout, coming home to warm drinks after a cool drive or a really special encounter with wildlife. I love surprising people with what they least expect, especially out here in the bush!

Finally, what do you think guests love most about their stay at Arkaba?
The chance to relax, detach from busy lifestyles and reconnect with nature.

Position: Chef

What got you started with cooking?
My mother was a home economics teacher of over 40 years so growing up, I would be in her classrooms learning with her students the science, method and technique of certain foods and how they work and not work with each other. This cemented my passion of food and my want for a career in the industry.

What do you find most interesting about working at Arkaba?
Arkaba is such a unique concept when it comes to hospitality and tourism. The communal living arrangements in a high class facility is nothing I have encountered in my 20 years of experience. I relish at getting to know each guest and their experiences and being able to showcase my skills and talents in front of them. It is also pretty awesome knowing that you are contributing to the regrowth of an amazing piece of earth.

Is there something you love cooking for guests?
I have just discovered new and amazing herbs, spices and ingredients which are native to either Australia or the area. So with the amazing produce South Australia produces, I live incorporating these unique and rather uncommon flavours and really emphasizing the “WOW”factor for our guests.

Finally, what do you think guests love most about their stay at Arkaba?
hhhhmmmm…..it could be the freedom from technology, the unique environment and the guided story of the area, could be the 5-star meals and beverages that we offer, could be the fact they come as strangers and develop lifelong friendships with other guests…..but I think the element the guests love most about their stay at Arkaba is definitely me. 🙂
